True Love Sees No Color

NOVEMBER is National Adoption Month...

When I adopted my Remmy girl, I never knew how my life and family would change. This is Remmy’s Memaw and Papa (Genia and Dennis). When I met them, I instantly fell in love with them. They (along with their loving family) opened their home and their hearts to Remmy and I. I knew I wanted Remmy to have a relationship with them but I never knew how much a part of our lives they would become. I never knew that I would describe them as “our family.” I never knew they would become some of my closest confidantes. How many laughs we would share. How many texts and visits we would share. I never knew how loved we would be by them and how much we would love them. I know now and, as a result, I am so grateful for adoption because I cannot imagine my lives without them. Sadly, Papa passed away recently and we now have to imagine how life will be without him.

Papa was one of the greatest men I have ever known. He loved God and his family with all of his heart. His love for his wife was remarkable to witness. He could light up a room with his smile and make you laugh until your sides hurt. He was a man who learned from his mistakes and found joy in everything he did. He was the first person Remmy would look for and run to when we arrived at their house. She loved her Papa and he loved her.

We are blessed to have known this man and I will cherish our memories with him. I am grateful that adoption brought him, Genia, and the rest of their family into our lives. God knew we needed them and I would never want to imagine a life any other way. So as “our family” prepares to say goodbye to Papa, I just wanted to take a moment to honor our Papa. He is loved and missed.
