Antietam Battfield. Somewhere I’ve always wanted to see. The heaviness of the loss of life weighs heavy.

The Battle of Antietam was a major Civil War clash fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland. This battle stopped Robert E. Lee’s first invasion of the North, even though neither side won a clear tactical victory.

Antietam left about 22,700 soldiers killed, wounded, or missing in a single day, making it the bloodiest day in American history.

This engagement was more than a battle — it was a turning point. The bloodshed helped set the stage for the Emancipation Proclamation and changed the course of the Civil War.



At Antietam, the Dunker Church became more than a place of worship — it became a symbol of peace surrounded by the chaos of war. Its story is one of faith, tragedy, and endurance. It survived the war with major damage. It was repaired and opened again for worship in 1864. Later it was destroyed in a windstorm. In 1921 it was restored in its original foundation with materials from the original church.

The Irish Brigade was a famed Union unit made up largely of Irish immigrants that fought with great bravery at Antietam, especially around the Sunken Road. Their charge became one of the most remembered moments of the battle and helped cement their reputation for courage and heavy sacrifice.

The Sunken Road at Antietam, later known as “Bloody Lane,” became one of the deadliest spots on the battlefield. In the fighting there, thousands were engaged and about 5,500 casualties were suffered in the midday attack alone.

This was a shortcut that travelers used to bypass Sharpsburg and over time wore down the ground. The Confederates used it as a defensive position during the war.

It was called bloody lane by soldiers and eyewitnesses after the battle, because so many men lay dead and wounded in and around the road.

Burnside Bridge stands today as a quiet landmark, but at Antietam it was the site of desperate fighting and heavy sacrifice on September 17, 1862.

The large tree on the opposite side of the river is a witness tree. It was there when the battle happened.
