When seeking a partner what are the attributes you look for? This is a common discussion in our group therapy sessions because often we think we are seeking out the right things but instead see a repetition of the same abuse pattern anyways.

One of the women in our group last week acknowledged that she often seems out someone attractive, well established, and funny but they tend to all end the same way. So I asked her if she seeks someone who is self disciplined? Respectful? Compassionate?

She permitted me to share her story. She thought by seeking someone well established that meant their self discipline in their career would equate to safety because they showed the capacity to self regulate. But self discipline in finances isn’t the the same as compassion, kindness, respect for you.

Many of us see disagreement, or turbulence as a natural part of a relationship and it can be but as victims we tend to try to win the argument and the affection of the abuser and we will compromise and lose the argument to keep the affection. This pattern leads to a breakdown in power, respect and boundaries.

When a man habitually crosses your boundaries he does not respect you and this is the sign to leave.

Personally I don’t leave room for this to occur. At the first sign of my boundaries not being respected I remove myself from the room, from the conversation, from the person. My safety and peace are precious. But I had to learn that. Because in childhood my boundaries were never respected. Many of us in narcissistic abuse recovery are experiencing that same thing

I encourage you to make a list of what you actually look for in a partner, and what you actually need from a partner and see where those lists align and differ.
