๐Ÿพ Spay & Neuter: One of the Best Gifts You Can Give Your Pet โค๏ธ

One of the most common questions we hear is:

"When should I spay or neuter my pet?"

The answer is... it depends!

Every pet is unique, and the ideal age can vary based on species, breed, size, s*x, lifestyle, and overall health. Recent veterinary research has shown that there is no longer a "one-size-fits-all" recommendation for every dog.

๐Ÿฑ Cats
The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and several feline veterinary organizations recommend spaying or neutering by 5 months of age, before most cats reach s*xual maturity. This helps prevent unwanted litters, spraying, roaming, and significantly reduces the risk of mammary cancer in female cats.

๐Ÿถ Dogs
For dogs, timing depends largely on adult size and breed.

๐Ÿพ Small-breed dogs (expected adult weight under approximately 45 lbs)
โ€ข Spay: Around 5โ€“6 months, before the first heat when appropriate.
โ€ข Neuter: Around 6 months.

๐Ÿพ Large- and giant-breed dogs
Many larger breeds benefit from waiting until they are closer to skeletal maturityโ€”often 9โ€“15 months, and in some giant breeds even longer. Delaying surgery in certain breeds may reduce the risk of some orthopedic conditions while still allowing an individualized plan for each pet.

โค๏ธ Why spay or neuter?

โœ” Helps prevent unwanted litters.
โœ” Reduces the risk of life-threatening uterine infections (pyometra).
โœ” Greatly decreases the risk of mammary cancer when performed before the first heat in many female dogs and cats.
โœ” Eliminates the risk of testicular cancer.
โœ” Can reduce roaming, urine marking, and some hormone-driven behaviors.
โœ” Helps decrease pet overpopulation and the number of homeless animals entering shelters.

At Steel Veterinary Services, we believe every pet deserves an individualized recommendation. During your pet's examination, we'll discuss the latest research and help you choose the timing that's best for your pet's breed, size, and lifestyle.
