The first lady said proudly, “When my first child was born, my husband built me this beautiful mansion.”
The second smiled and replied, “Well, isn’t that nice?”
The first continued, “When my second child was born, he bought me that fine Cadillac out front.”
Again, the second woman responded, “Well, isn’t that nice?”
“And when my third child was born,” the first said with a grin, “he gave me this dazzling diamond bracelet.”
The second lady, as always, replied sweetly, “Well, isn’t that nice?”
Curious now, the first woman asked, “What did your husband give you when you had your first child?”

I never told my husband that I was the quiet multi-millionaire who owned the company he was celebrating that night. To him, I was just his “tired and unattractive” wife—the one who had “ruined her body” after giving birth to twins. At his promotion gala, I stood there holding our babies when he pushed me toward the exit.

“Your face looks swollen. You’re ruining the image. Just go,” he muttered.

I didn’t cry.

I didn’t argue.

I walked out of the party—and out of his life.

Hours later, I received his message:
The bank blocked my cards. Why can’t I get into the house?

“What is wrong with you?” Liam snapped, gripping my arm as he pulled me toward the dim hallway near the service exit. The faint smell from outside mixed with the expensive perfume drifting in from the ballroom.

“He spit up, Liam,” I said quietly, trying to stay composed. “He’s a baby. You could help instead of just standing there watching…”

“Help you?” he let out a short laugh, looking at me with clear irritation. “I’m the CEO, Ava. I don’t deal with that. That’s your responsibility. And clearly, you’re not handling it well.”

He reached up and tugged lightly at a strand of my hair.

“Look at Chloe from marketing,” he added coldly. “She had a baby last year and already looks perfect—running marathons, back in shape, polished. She knows how to take care of herself. And you? Four months later and you still look… worn out.”

I felt something tighten in my chest, but I stayed steady.
“I’m taking care of two newborns alone, Liam. I have no support. No time to recover. I don’t have—”

“That’s not my concern,” he cut in sharply. “Or maybe it’s just lack of discipline. You smell like milk, your dress barely fits, and you’re embarrassing me. I’m building something important here. I’m trying to impress the Owner, and you’re standing here reminding me of every mistake I’ve made.”

He gestured toward the back exit.

“Go home. Now. And don’t let anyone see you next to me again. You’re a distraction, Ava. Completely useless.”

Something inside me went completely still.

I looked at him—the man I once loved. The man I had supported, guided, and quietly opened doors for without ever asking for recognition.

He had no idea that the Owner he was so desperate to impress—the one whose approval he feared—was standing right in front of him.

The very woman he had just dismissed.

“Go home?” I asked softly.

“Yes. Leave,” he said impatiently. “Use the back exit. Don’t ruin the main entrance.”

I didn’t cry.

I pushed the stroller out into the cold night—but I didn’t go to the house Liam believed was his.

Instead, I drove to the hotel I owned.

I settled the twins, then opened my laptop.

While Liam raised a glass in that ballroom, celebrating a future he thought was secure, I opened my home system.

Main door access: Updated.
User “Liam”: Removed.

Next, I opened the car app.

Remote access: Revoked.

Finally, I logged into the internal HR system of Vertex Dynamics.

I scrolled down to:

Chief Executive Officer: Liam Sterling

The cursor paused over a single option.

Terminate Contract.
