As a retiring member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Dan Newhouse of Washington State’s Fourth Congressional District leaves us with a legacy that will help guide the future of hydroelectricity in America. The six-term congressman recently introduced a bill that was signed into law in May, directing the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to extend construction deadlines for licensed hydro projects. The law, colloquially known as the Build More Hydro Act, received bipartisan support. In this interview, Congressman Newhouse tells us about the law and its aims; the numerous benefits of hydropower; and the growing opportunities for this clean, reliable energy source.
