The Dawhoo Secret Code during the American Civil War on Edisto Island.
Because of the heavy military maneuvering around the river, the geographic term "Dawhoo" entered local wartime lore. As Union troops moved through the sea islands, lookout "runners" were positioned along the mainland swamp borders to track them. Landowners and Confederate scouts used "Dawhoo" as a secret code word to represent a mile (e.g., "five Dawhoos away" meant five miles away), giving remaining residents a synchronized warning system to flee before Union troops advanced.
