I decided to make it a series of stickers for the salon, as a silly way to take a stand against proposed Arkansas HB1668 featuring my spouse and two of my dearest friends, all of whom have gender non conforming hair.

Arkansas Republicans have proposed a bill that would allow lawsuits against people (hairdressers, teachers, tutors, their own affirmingg parent) who support transgender youth’s social transitions, including by using their preferred name and pronouns or by giving them a gender nonconforming haircut.

H.B. 1668, the so-called “Vulnerable Youth Protection Act,” would allow minors or their parents to sue anyone who even acknowledges a minor’s gender identity, including “without limitation changes in clothing, pronouns, hairstyle, and name.” Lawsuits are permitted up to 15 years after the alleged conduct, with damages of $10,000, or up to $10 million if they have received gender-affirming care.

So why does this matter when I am not a resident or business owner in Arkansas?

Because this is how it ALWAYS starts with the dissolution of rights. A lawsuit between a bigoted mom and the trans girl on the team who’s actually not even that good. Some childless rando sobbing at the PTA meeting demanding trans athletes get banned from sports because THINK OF THE (cis) CHILDREN.

Nevermind the fact that most trans athletes are actually just average. Nevermind the fact that being on a team of any kind where you’re treated with respect has incredible mental health benefits to a population of youths that has an incredibly high su***de and self harm rate.

This bill is just an attempt at a beginning. I could absolutely see this going nationwide in the current political climate. It’s not going to protect any kids whatsoever, it’s only another cudgel for conservative estranged parents to harm their children and the people that care for them and their mental health.

Hair has NO GENDER and I will never stop saying so.
