AAPB Virtual Education: Autonomic Dysfunction & Sensitized Chronic Pain

📣Presented by Peter Behel, MA, BCB; Kaiser Permanente Contracted Provider and JP Ginsberg, PhD; Licensed Clinical Psychologist/Columbia Neuropsychology Service LLC

🗓 Friday, August 21, 2026
⏰1:00 pm to 2:30 pm EDT

Chronic pain is increasingly understood as involving altered autonomic regulation and central sensitization, not simply tissue injury. This educational presentation explores the neurobiology underlying these processes and reviews current evidence for heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) as an adjunctive approach to pain management.

🌟What You'll Gain🌟

**Understand current concepts in autonomic mechanisms of chronic pain**
**Differentiate nociceptive, neuropathic, and nociplastic pain**
**Learn when HRV biofeedback may be clinically useful**
**Apply practical concepts to patient assessment and treatment planning**

1.5 CE credits available for full event participation. You must attend the full, live delivery of the presentation to qualify for CE Credits.

🎯Target Audience: Psychologists, physicians, rehabilitation professionals, physical therapists, nurses, biofeedback practitioners, and other clinicians interested in autonomic regulation and chronic pain.

We’ve talked about respiratory muscle strength training for swallow rehab, but the focus has been on expiratory strength. Now, Li et al.’s new RCT offers some inspiring evidence for inspiratory training.

Check out our research review “INSPIREing new treatment for post-stroke dysphagia” to find

*details of this study’s findings and how we might apply them to our practice

*links to our other research reviews on respiratory muscle strength training and a printable effort scale, and

*5 minutes CE credit.
