Hugh Davis — a zoologist — built the Blue Whale as a surprise anniversary gift for his wife Zelta. He and a friend spent two years welding the frame and applying hand-mixed cement one five-gallon bucket at a time, until it stood 20 feet tall and 80 feet long.

Soon enough, locals started sneaking in to have a little fun with the jolly blue giant prompting Davis to bring in sand, build picnic tables, hire lifeguards, and open it up to the public.

Eventually, it fell into disrepair and shut down until the Catoosa community rallied to restore it in 1997. Since then, the city has purchased the property and the Blue Whale is currently undergoing the final touches of a 2 million dollar renovation complete with a new visitor center.

It’s set to open May 30.

Ride it while you still can! It’s so easy to take a day trip or weekend getaway, especially with kiddos.

Once again, the Heartland Flyer is in danger of shutting down. 😢 This is a well used means of transportation between OKC and Fort Worth and it’s a shame Texas doesn’t recognize the value.
