Found some interesting history today: back in 1873 and well into the 1900's Toledo's first waterworks was in South Toledo pumping water from the then clean Maumee River to residents of the city. At this site once stood the "largest iron column in the world" surrounded by over 2 million bricks which was used to create water pressure in the system. Initially the water was distributed untreated directly from the river and in 1910 a filtration plant began operation also on this site and was used up until the Collins Park plant began operation in the 1940's.
