FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HATE BURPEES....

I came across this article from stack.com on who actually invented the beloved exercise....

The Burpee is named for a physiologist named Royal Huddleston Burpee. For his Ph.D. thesis at Columbia University in 1940, he invented the exercise as a way to assess the fitness of non-active adults. Burpee made participants perform only four Burpees at a time, and he actually specified that the movement should not be performed for a high number of repetitions. He was testing people who were generally unfit, and he warned that Burpees could be harmful to the knees and back and detrimental to those without proper core strength.

Originally, the exercise was called a “Squat Thrust," and it had four parts—the Squat, the Plank, the jump back and the return to standing. The Push-Up and the Jump were added later.

During World War II, the U.S. military picked up the exercise as part of its required fitness test. Those entering the armed forces had to do Burpees for 20 seconds. A few years later, they upped the requirement to 60 seconds.

Thus began the tradition of Burpees as pure and grueling punishment. And however many variations have been added since then, it remains one of the best exercises for a full-body workout.

SPARTAN!!!!.....
There's no turning back now....Big props to Peter and Frank for getting the ball rolling and signing up this week.
Officially confirmed that we are a go for the Spartan Sprint in Malibu on Dec 6th. We will be doing the 9:30am heat. Anyone who wants to register go to spartanrace.com. Also I believe there is currently a discount available right now. The coupon code is "Laborday" (one word).
Looks like we may have a big group, so it should be lots of fun.
Also big props to our 1st official Junior Spartan Natty, who is registered for the kids course at noon the same day. We will all be sure to stick around and cheer her on....along with any other Junior Spartans who decide to join her.
Get those burpees in people!!!! (Aaron....start training now....You're up next in January!)

AUGUST UPDATE:
Blast from the past Regina joined the Motley Crew this morning for a push/pull workout. Rumor around town is that she will be joining us for the Spartan Sprint in December. Speaking of the Spartan, it looks like we are looking at the Dec 6th date in Malibu. Frank, Ranjiv, Joaquin, Regina, and Peter did their burpee preparation this morning, and it looks like little Natty may be our first ever "Junior Spartan" as she has been in training as well. Hopefully this will be a good warm up for the "Super Spartan" we are looking to do in January with our good friend Aaron who will be coming down from Seattle.
On a personal note, I want to give a big shout out to Kate and Danny who are getting married in Nantucket as we speak! Those of you who know Kate (or if you've seen her lately), I need not explain the transformation she has gone through and all the hard work she has put in. Down around 60lbs and STILL going! SO PROUD!!! Wishing them a Happy and Healthy life together.
Lastly, as some of you know, my phone was lost/stolen from the gym the other day (depending on if you ask me or my wife). I am currently using my old IPhone3 which apparently has problems receiving texts from newer version phones, so if I don't return a text, it's because I didn't get it. Hopefully will be resolved soon.
Looking forward to finishing the year STRONG.....

PETER DOES IT AGAIN…

Motley Crew member Peter finished yet another Century Ride today completing 100 miles on his bike in 6 hours and 31 mins. In order to show our support for him, the Crew did 100 squats as their finisher! (after a 20 min full body obstacle course). EVERYONE finished!!! Good job guys and great to see Lia again too. (She's gonna be sore…)

SATURDAY SHOUT OUTS!!!... Just wanted to give a few shout outs today.

Regina gets big props as she is participating in the Zombie Mud Run today with family and friends. I am so proud of her for making fitness part of her life and sad that I'm not there with her. I feel blessed to be part of her transformation.
Also wanted to give some love to Monica for making it back today after being sidelined from ankle surgery. She joined the Motley Crew (Frank, Aaron, Adolfo, Shelanee, Jose, Adrianna, Joaquin, Suzy, Chloe, Sophia, Ranjv, and Jolene) and went right to work. She is looking good and happy to have her back!
