In a notable shift, newly built homes are now selling for less than existing homes -an unusual trend in the housing market, where new construction has traditionally come at a premium.

This change comes as home builders aggressively cut prices to boost sales amid softer demand.

In June, the median sales price of a new home dropped to $401,800 -about 5% lower than in May. By contrast, the median price of an existing home rose to a record high of $435,300.
