If a contractor doesn’t include gravel for your sub grade then beware! Gravel has more then one purpose when prepping for a concrete project.
1: Reduces likelihood of settlement
2: Keeps the concrete from dehydrating prematurely. Adding too much water to concrete is the last thing you want to do while finishing because it decreases the strength and leads to spalling and pitting. Sealing concrete during the lay down process is by far the biggest factor to longevity. We see a lot of dehydrated concrete here in Texas!
