If people are going to tag this dusty old sight I might need to post things here.
Here is something I wrote a long time ago.
On shame and blame and pain. I woke up wanting to talk about white people and men — with love.
Notes on resumes
A resume is not you. A resume is a thought argument crafted specifically in relation to a particular position to earn a conversation.
A job description is more like a jigsaw puzzle representation of what a role will be that the truth and the life. It has a general narrative, much like your resume should. Many important things are not included.
You should literally use the words in a job posting to describe your experience on a resume tailored for that role. Yes, this means heavy customization, but it will make you irresistible.
You should have a professional summary where you describe yourself in a way that makes it clear you can accomplish the general narrative listed in the job description using their words.
Do not be afraid to apply for jobs where you do not have everything they need or want but tell them why you can ramp up quickly. Address your gaps by comparing similar things you have done - tools, accomplishments, situations.
Building a bridge between your experience and a particular position is the goal. The better the bridge the better your chances of getting an interview.
