The McMurry House

Let's talk pre-pink. This 1896 Greek Revival's exterior had seen better days, but we didn't realize *just* how much better until we got to work on paint prep. 🥴
One thing about having a historic home on the National Registry is the commitment you make to keeping as much of it original as possible. So, we worked hard to replace a majority of the rotted wood siding as possible. It's estimated that we replaced nearly 60% in the process. We also reworked the grading around the house since so much sloped inward and while we hadn't noticed water issues, we knew they'd be on their way if we didn't fix it soon.
Last but not least, our beautiful, majestic...terribly peeling...columns. No matter how much anti-peel we added to the primer, paint just wasn't going to look great on these beauties until we brought them down to the wood and started over. It took a crew of four men four weekends (10 hour days!) of sanding to get them there. We're forever grateful for them!
Even though we sured up the exterior, we still have work to do on it. We're looking at replacing some back window frames and flashing since it was removed by a previous owner. We're hopeful to find time period items for it instead.
Eventually, we'd love to redo our steps and walkway to the house, too.
