What we were taught vs what we needed:

We were taught to be quiet,but what we needed was to be heard.

We were taught to “know our place,” but what we needed was to feel safe.

We were taught to protect the family’s image, but what we needed was protection.

Silence was called respect and endurance was called strength.

And now as women, we are doing the work of unlearning what once kept us silent.

And I hear persons asking why isn’t she speaking up, why did she stay so long?

The answer is simple - we were trained to shut up from little.

So to the women who no longer choose to carry secrets or carry their pain quietly, I salute you!
