Allergic Like Me

Yea!!!!
Across the country, a small but growing number of universities are beginning to stock undesignated epinephrine, life-saving medication such as neffy, EpiPen, and AUVI-Q directly inside their dining halls. This shift matters as dining halls are one of the most common places where allergic reactions occur. Studies show that many students will experience a reaction before they graduate, often influenced by inconsistent labeling, menu changes, or the social pressure to try foods without asking questions. Universities like the University of Michigan, the University of Maryland, Illinois State University, and Duke University have implemented programs that include training dining staff in anaphylaxis response, securing blanket prescriptions, and, in some cases, advocating for changes in state law to make these programs possible. While these institutions report that the medication is used only once or twice a year, when it is needed, it can save a life. Despite this impact, only 11 out of 217 universities verified by FARE currently stock undesignated epinephrine in dining halls. FARE continues to advocate for broader adoption of stock epinephrine programs, improved food allergy protocols, and training that ensures students can navigate campus dining with confidence and without fear.
