Some dogs have a harder road to travel than others.
While most of the dogs that enter our foster program have experienced significant neglect, medical concerns, or behavioral challenges, every once in a while a dog comes along whose journey is especially difficult. A dog that, without intervention, likely would never get the chance to show the world who they truly are.
Two years ago, while visiting Sioux City Animal Control, one of our foster families noticed a little red dog cowering in the back corner of a concrete kennel. Her tail was tucked, her ears were pinned back, and a soft growl escaped every time someone approached. She wasn't seeking attention. She wasn't asking for help. She was simply trying to survive.
Standing there looking at that terrified little red dog, we knew she was not going to be a candidate for a typical adoption. We also knew that if someone didn't take a chance on her, she likely wouldn't get another one.
That little red dog was Francine.
Fast forward two years, and Francine has become one of the most beloved dogs in our program. She has captured the hearts of trainers, volunteers, foster families, and supporters who have watched her slowly learn that the world isn't such a scary place after all. She has taught us what resilience looks like. She has shown us what survival looks like. And every single milestone she has achieved has been earned through patience, trust, and an incredible amount of hard work.
Unfortunately, her story isn't over yet.
Due to circumstances beyond anyone's control, Francine's foster family is facing some difficult decisions regarding their future, including the sale of their home. As a result, we are now facing a deadline we never wanted to face.
By July 31, Francine needs to find her forever family.
After everything this girl has overcome, we desperately want to avoid moving her into another foster home. We want the next transition she makes to be the last one.
Francine is not looking for a chaotic lifestyle. She isn't looking for crowded dog parks, constant visitors, or a house full of activity. She wants her people.
She would thrive with a single person or a couple who understands that relationships are built, not rushed. A home without young children or cats would be ideal. While she enjoys the company of a calm, respectful male dog, she would be perfectly happy soaking up all the attention herself.
Francine doesn't walk into a room and immediately hand out hugs to strangers. She takes her time. She observes. She decides when she feels safe. But when she trusts you, she loves with her entire heart.
She is just as happy joining you on a hike, road trip, or outdoor adventure as she is curling up on the couch at the end of the day to watch TV together. She doesn't ask for much.
She simply needs someone willing to meet her where she is.
Someone who understands that love isn't pushed, mandated, or bought.
It's earned.
Please help us share Francine's story. Share this post. Cross-post it. Tell your friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, and anyone else who might be her perfect match. We have until July 31 to find the people she has been waiting her entire life for.
Let's make sure Francine's next chapter is the one she deserves. ❤️
