Poinsettias are native of Central America and Mexico and Aztecs used them as ornamental plants. Dr. Poinsett—physician, founder of the Smithsonian Institution, congressman, U.S. Secretary of War under President Martin Van Buren and the first U.S. Minister to Mexico—discovered the plant while visiting an area of southern Mexico called Taxco del Alarcon and introduced the Poinsettia to the United States in 1828.
