It’s the season where poison oak is running rampant out here in California. I have actually never gotten poison oak * knocking on wood as I am writing this* but I know it can cause a huge dermal and histamine response! I got really good at identifying poison oak at a young age because my parents were always very adamant about pointing it out. It’s sort of tricky to distinguish though because it can intertwine itself among other plants, camouflaging easily. You can see how similar upon first glance it looks among the blackberry patch! The vines can also grow so huge that it looks like a tree trunk~ I’ve seen ginormous vines wrapped around redwood trees.

All parts of the plant contain Urushiol: an oil that causes the allergic contact dermatitis rash in most people. Even burning poison oak can release the urushiol into the smoke! This is a plant that demands extreme respect and boundaries. It tends to grow in disturbed areas, so I see it as a sort of protector of places.

This is a plant that most people should familiarize themselves with in being able to identify it in all stages of its lifecycle. Even dormant poison oak (without its leaves) contains urushiol! The saying, “leaves of three, leave it be” is a helpful little rhyme, but if you notice- a lot of plants have leaves of three! so it’s good to identify the subtle differences and characteristics of plants like poison oak, so you’ll really recognize it when you see it, and give it the space that it demands 🍂

Elderflowers🌸 a little immune system invitation to address acute colds, sniffles, fevers, & allergies. I love their presence in teas while we’re in this in between season of spring to summer. Colder to warmer weather fluctuating day to day~ Eager to try them topically as they’re an anti-inflammatory & have a cooling quality that helps to nourish & detox the skin, notably also assisting with UV protection🌟
Normally we prize the berries, but elderflowers have their place too & now is when they begin to bloom!🌸
