As a professional organizer I see every day the aftermath caused my excessive consumerism and the accumulation of too much stuff. I've seen the stress and anxiety it causes people on a daily basis to try and keep and store all this stuff. I've seen the chaos caused by people inheriting their loved ones items after they've passed. Industries like Goodwill make billions of dollars off the stuff people buy and discard. Nearly two thirds of this stuff will end up in the landfill because there's just too much to sell. There are huge emotional, mental, and environmental consequences of continuing to buy cheap electronics, furniture, clothing, etc. The only solution to this growing problem is to buy less stuff.
