Some people say my daughter is hard headed
like it’s an insult whispered behind her back in grocery aisles and school pick up lines

But I see a girl who won’t shrink herself to be liked
a girl who asks why instead of nodding yes
a girl who knows her boundaries before the world teaches her how badly she needs them

That stubborn streak they worry about
is the same fire that will keep her safe
the same spine that will help her say no
the same courage that will keep her from following crowds off cliffs

I’m not raising a quiet little people pleaser
I’m raising a girl who knows who she is

And yeah… she’s hard headed
because one day the world will try to break her

and she’ll be the one who refuses.

When I look at my daughter, I see myself but braver, funnier, wiser and far more beautiful. She's everything I ever dreamed of in a little girl and so much more. I grew my very best friend from scratch... and I'll never stop being grateful for her.
