Interesting news story about McKelvey's of Youngstown, OH. I talk about McKelvey's in my book. Future Globe Store chairman, William Russell Preston, got his start at this store where he started as a junior salesman and rose through the ranks until he attained the position of executive vice president. He left McKelvey's to take a similar position at The Globe. Like The Globe, McKelvey's eventually succumbed to changing shopping habits and the diminishing influence of department stores.
Beautiful story. With 56 years of service in the downtown Wilkes-Barre store, this employee actually started with Boscov's predecessor, Fowler, Dick and Walker-The Boston Store. In the old days, stories like this were not uncommon. Department store salespeople and staff were considered professionals, and they often stayed their entire working lives. When Oppenheim's closed in 1980, for example, there were employees still working that had started with the firm in the early 1920's. I wish this woman a long and happy retirement. 👏 😊

Happy St. Patrick's Day! ☘️ 🍀 ☘️ 🍀
I found another Globe Store commercial from March 1987. I was happy to see the lamp department shown here. It was on the third floor, and I remember you had to walk through lamps and then down a ramp to get to the toy department, which was my favorite place to be as kid. Good memories. 😊
