Thinking about adopting a rescue horse? Read this first.
I absolutely support giving horses a second chance, but I also believe people need to go into rescue horse ownership with realistic expectations.
A horse coming from a rescue isn't automatically a "beginner-safe" horse or a horse that's ready to go in any direction. Many rescue horses have experienced neglect, poor nutrition, inconsistent handling, trauma, medical issues, or gaps in their training. Some require months—or even years—of rehabilitation before they're physically and mentally ready for a new job.
That's not a criticism of rescues. It's simply the reality of the horses they take in.
Where I encourage people to do their homework is in evaluating the rescue itself. Ask questions:
• Has the horse had a veterinary exam? • Has it been evaluated by a qualified trainer? • Are behavioral issues being honestly disclosed? • Is the horse sound for its intended use? • Has it received adequate nutrition, dental care, hoof care, and vaccinations? • Can the rescue tell you what they know—and don't know—about the horse?
Not all rescues operate the same way. Some invest tremendous time and money into rehabilitation and training before placing horses. Others simply don't have the financial resources, staff, or expertise to do extensive rehabilitation before rehoming. That doesn't necessarily make them bad people—it may simply reflect limited resources—but it does mean buyers need to do their own due diligence.
In my experience, putting weight back on a horse is often the easiest part. Addressing years of poor training, fear, trauma, chronic pain, or behavioral issues can take far longer and requires experience.
A rescue horse can become an incredible partner, but it's important to match the horse with the right person and to understand what you're taking on. The more honest we are about a horse's needs, the better the outcome is for both the horse and its new owner.
