Giving 50+lbs of clay a go!
I’ve been bit by the big bug and am taking on the challenge. Each day this past week after my normal production, I’ve set out an hour or two to throw something bigger. First couple were 25lbs and yesterday I decided to give 50lbs a shot. I was inspired after watching some clips from whose numbers are simply elite.
I’m going in somewhat blind on centering such a mass amount of clay and have been trying out some options for getting it centered. One is to section it out as a slowly work it down the mound and towards the bat. Which is the opposite of how I would approach my normal production weight. Anyway, it’s hard.
I’m working on a full video but unfortunately my camera was too close once I started pulling the walls out that it takes up more than the full screen 😂

I’m teaching the very first 6 week advanced pottery workshop right here in Sandpoint and I’m stoked!
This is for the potter who’s ready to go further, throw taller, and explore more difficult forms! Over 6 Monday evenings at , we’ll dig into the skills that transform good work into great work.
This isn’t a beginner class. This is for the people who already love clay and are hungry to push what they can do with it. (The beginner 6 week workshop will start Tuesday April 7th, same format)
✦ Begins Monday, April 6th
✦ Every Monday, 5–7 pm
✦ 6 weeks · Sandpoint Ceramics

Back in the studio and making pots! 🏺
To celebrate my 3 month break from clay, I am throwing a 25 pound one-piece planter as my first pot. I prefer to center as one whole lump, which is no small feat even when I’m throwing regularly.
Since I’ve got 2,900 pounds of clay sitting on a pallet that I don’t have space for in my studio, the goal is to start moving through some boxes asap!
The clay actually softened up more than I expected it to so I got to work with a bit of a wobble after my first pull was a bit thin.
I’ll post the process as it is trimmed and dried. Enjoy and hit me with questions if you’ve got em.
If this is the kind of work you want to learn, I’m teaching advanced classes starting April 6th
