I was glad to support Kansas House Bill 2444 this session. This newly enacted criminal justice and sentencing law will take effect on July 1st - it restricts jail time credits on consecutive sentences, creates presumptive imprisonment for repeat felony offenders, and mandates stricter, secured appearance bonds for high-risk defendants. As your State Representative, I will continue to advocate for public safety measures that protect your family and our communities. Steven K. Howe for Kansas

Happy 80th birthday President Donald J. Trump! You are in the prayers of many throughout the United States of America and the world. May the Lord guide you in His wisdom and faithfulness.

"First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth." 1 Timothy 2:1-4

I wouldn’t be able to serve our community without the unwavering support of my family. It is truly an honor to represent the hardworking families of Kansas House District 71.

Self-governance starts in our homes, and how we raise the next generation deeply impacts the future of our entire society. Let’s continue to prioritize strong parenting and strong families—because when our homes thrive, the need for government involvement fades.

I am proud to stand alongside community partners in support of charitable events in my community. The beautiful thing is that people do it out of the goodness of their heart. I am glad to represent such a generous community.

Just because the Legislature is not in session doesn’t mean the work has stopped! 🏛️ 💼

This week, I had a series of productive meetings with the staff at General Atomics, the Salina Economic Development Organization, and the Salina Airport Authority. There continues to be an incredible amount of potential for economic growth right here in Salina.

However, like many Kansas communities, we face real challenges when it comes to housing availability and expanding our workforce.

To meet these workforce needs, we must continue strengthening our local talent pipeline. I have a strong, consistent record of supporting our incredible local academic offerings and training programs, including:

• Our local High Schools & career pathways
• Salina Area Technical College
• Kansas State University Salina
• Kansas Wesleyan University
• KU School of Medicine & KU School of Nursing (Salina campuses)
• Smoky Hill Medical Residency Program

By backing these institutions, we ensure our young people and professionals have the tools to succeed right here at home. As we look toward the future, I will continue to advocate for free-market solutions that address our housing and workforce hurdles, support our local industries, and advance both our community and our state.

Within 100 years of declaring our independence, our nation was torn apart by a bloody Civil War that claimed over 600,000 lives.

In the years that followed, communities across the country—both Black and White—began gathering in the spring to clear weeds from soldiers' graves and decorate them with fresh flowers. This heartfelt tradition grew from Decoration Day into Memorial Day: a solemn time to reflect on those who gave the full measure of devotion.

There are many personal ways to honor the fallen. Earlier this session, I visited the Freedom Tree on the south grounds of our State Capitol. It is dedicated to Major Bruce Johnson (a Kansan from Salina who went Missing in Action in Vietnam in 1965) and all Prisoners of War and Missing in Action. Meeting his sons last year and hearing their family's testimony left a lasting impact on me. Learning these personal stories is what makes Memorial Day truly meaningful.

Years ago, I took this photo of the Fallen Soldier Memorial at Fort Riley. I attended far too many memorial services there for young soldiers lost in Afghanistan and Iraq. Witnessing young families torn apart by war is something that stays with you forever.

Let us never forget. Let us always demand an exceptionally high watermark before choosing to enter into conflict. Our young men and women are our most precious national treasure, and we must always treat their lives with the highest value.

🏠 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Protecting Kansans from Roofing Scams 🏠

Thinking about repairing or replacing your roof? Before you sign anything or hand over any money, make sure you protect yourself and your home by verifying your roofing contractor!

Under the Kansas Roofing Contractor Registration Act, almost all roofing contractors must obtain a registration certificate from the Kansas Attorney General to legally provide commercial or residential services in the state. This law ensures contractors carry appropriate insurance and helps keep fly-by-night operators from taking advantage of Kansas consumers.

Here is what you need to do before hiring a roofer:

🛡️ Verify Before You Hire

Ask for proof: Request a copy of the contractor's registration certificate or registration number.

Check their status: Confirm the company is registered and "In Good Standing" by visiting the official directory: https://www.ag.ks.gov/divisions/public-protection/resources/roofing-registration-directory #!/ (Note: This registration is in addition to any local city or county requirements!)

📋 Follow These Essential Safety Tips
Working with a registered roofer is the bare minimum. The Attorney General’s office also recommends these steps when dealing with any contractor:

Get recommendations and references from people you trust.

Get at least three written estimates from different contractors.

Check contractor complaint records with the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Fully understand your payment options and your right to cancel.

🚨 See Something, Say Something!
The Attorney General’s Roofing Registration Unit is actively working with local officials to support communities, but they need your help. Please promptly report any unregistered person or company attempting to sell roofing services.

If you encounter or have problems with an unregistered roofing contractor, file a report online or by phone:
💻 Report Online: https://www.ag.ks.gov/file-a-complaint/report-an-unregistered-roofer #!/
📞 Call: 785-368-6644

Share this post to help keep your friends, family, and neighbors safe from roofing scams! 🔄
