🗞️🐍Extra, extra, read all about it: The endangered San Francisco garter snake is the focus of a first-ever program to boost its numbers in the wild! @USGS biologists collected healthy pregnant mother snakes, and safely transported them to the @SanFranciscoZoo, where the Conservation Team helped rear approximately 120 baby snakes. In 2026, when the young snakes can fend for themselves, they will be strategically released back into the wild with the hopes of bolstering populations in key habitats. At the heart of this effort is an ambitious habitat restoration project in San Mateo County’s national parklands, led by the Parks Conservancy and @GoldenGateNPS, as we work to build national parks where people and nature can thrive. “You see the use of boardwalks,” said the Parks Conservancy's Claire Mooney. “Snakes can now safely stay on their path of travel and migrate from pond to pond.” Thanks to all the partners on this amazing project, including @MidPenOpenSpace, @SFRecPark, @USFWS and other state and local agencies making this effort possible!
