I would like to point out some details about this picture for the beginner beekeepers out there! At first glance you should be able to identify the queen in the middle! But take a closer look at the bees around her! You will typically see attendants that will stay by the queen and take care of her. They are usually facing her and sometimes you may see them in a circle around her all facing her. Next, you may notice the fuzzy looking bees below her. These are newly emerged bees that may just be hours or a day old. There job immediately after emerging is cleaning cells. As they get older they will get different duties. Many don’t realize the different stages of the workers in the hive. These are just a couple. It is age based and the oldest workers are the foragers. It’s amazing how efficient a colony is!
