Test taking anxiety is a combination of physical and emotional symptoms that precede a test and or occur during a test. These range in extremes from worry about outcomes, to profound physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, nausea, diarrhea, excessive sweating, shortness of breath, light-headedness or fainting, rapid heart beat, and dry mouth. The extreme psychological symptoms may range from poor concentration to completely ‘going blank’ or a confused state.
There is a negative feedback loop that begins to occur after some experience. These may be traumatic events, but more often are seemingly insignificant small experiences that plant the seed of fear. Fear of failure is the one most often heard, but it can also include disappointing one’s parents, peer comparisons, fear of success causing unwanted changes, etc. As part of this negative feedback loop the fear begins to instill negative self talk, which usually leads to self condemnation and feelings of inadequacy. The anticipated negatives grow from momentary failure to doom and gloom catastrophes. All of this negative mental work feeds back into the physical body and causes production of ‘fight or flight’ stress hormones which then flood the body. Done too often, they cause physical symptoms.
