We debated posting this, but we feel it’s important to share what we experienced last night on the Ocean City, MD boardwalk on the evening of 7/4/2025. It’s heartbreaking to see how much this place has changed. We hadn’t been to Ocean City in years and decided to take our kids for a 4th of July trip. We were eating outside at Hammerheads near 10th Street when the fireworks started around 9:30pm. Our daughter was taking a video of the fireworks from our table on my husband’s phone when chaos suddenly broke out. A stampede of people came running down the boardwalk yelling about an active shooter. We had to react quickly and rushed inside the restaurant. Tables were flipped over for protection. In the panic, our daughter dropped the phone—and it ended up recording everything. The footage captures the fear and confusion in those moments. Toward the end, you can hear a security guard saying, “Shots fired apparently, so need everybody inside.” A woman then picks up the phone, and the video cuts out. Thankfully, we were able to recover the phone and were surprised to see what it had recorded. We later learned the panic at the boardwalk was caused by fireworks being set off within a crowd—but in the moment, it felt surreal & terrifying, like something out of a movie. Then, later that night, there was an actual active shooter situation reported around 28th Street. Thankfully, by that time we were back inside where we were staying and safe. The news coverage is downplaying what happened as “just fireworks,” but for those of us who were there—especially with young children—it was absolutely terrifying. Please stay alert and stay safe. Things can change in an instant.
