Turf Plus - How to Find Bugs Turf Plus gives a demonstrations how to find bugs
We are almost done with the season. Snow will be sticking soon and we are wrapping up. Thanks everyone for a great year!
Our current application is the Fall Winterizer, which aids in winter hardiness and disease resistance. Did you know that if you refer a friend or family member and they receive our service, you will both receive a $10 credit as a token of our appreciation?
We often experience an “Indian summer.” These weeks of warm dry weather can dry out the soil, so draining your sprinkler system before the end of October may prevent your lawn from looking its best. We recommend one last deep watering the very end of October to make sure your lawn has plenty of water going into the winter. Afterward, drain your system. This will be enough time before the hard frosts of December to protect your sprinkler system from damage.
Continue to water deeply and as often as needed. Usually, a good deep watering once a week in October will be sufficient.
It is almost certain that a lawn, seeming to require water on an every-day basis, is not being irrigated to a sufficient depth when it is watered, or the sprinkler system is delivering uneven water coverage. Blue grass lawns should have a root system depth of 8-10 inches. In order for the roots to grow that deep, watering 8-10 inches of wet soil is necessary.
Reasons to overseed may include: Lawn thinning due to repeated drought stress or excess shade issues, insect damage, or infiltration by undesirable perennial grasses, such as orchardgrass. Another reason to overseed during this time of year is that it will not interfere with a pre-emergent herbicide treatment, for preventative control of crabgrass and other summer annual w**ds, applied during the spring.
September is an excellent time of year for a lawn renovation project. Temperatures will have sufficiently cooled, so keeping the newly planted grass seed moist will be easier, yet be warm enough to achieve good seed germination. This timing for seeding will ensure the new seedlings have approximately three months to grow and mature prior to a hard freeze of the soil and allow nine months for the roots to become fully established before the heat of summer arrives.
Uneven water coverage can be difficult to identify, through simple visual observation, while the sprinklers are operating. Instead, straight sided containers (like a can) are useful in this regard. Place these containers throughout the lawn selecting some areas that are green and others that may appear brown or growing more slowly. After running the sprinkler system through a normal cycle, observe the difference in the amount of water captured in each container. Changes in the sprinkler system architecture should then be made to remedy the uneven water coverage issues found during this process.
Lawn Care Tip: Mowing your lawn at a height of 2.5 to 3 inches will help to shade the soil decreasing new w**d seed germination and reducing water loss due to evaporation.
