Michael Nielson is one of UVU's Assistant Chief Flight Instructors. His favorite part of the job is teaching students how to fly and watching them accomplish challenging goals. Around the airport, he’s known for always having a great story from his military days, along with an impressive depth of knowledge about aircraft systems and aviation.

Michael knew he wanted to join the Army and fly helicopters from the time he was five years old. He turned that dream into reality, flying the Black Hawk helicopter throughout his military career until his retirement. After leaving the military, he enrolled at UVU to earn his fixed-wing licenses and complete his bachelor’s degree.

While completing his flight training at UVU, he took a part-time job in aircraft maintenance. He eventually transitioned to full-time when he realized he wanted a career that allowed him to stay closer to home. He has been serving as an Assistant Chief for about two years.

Michael’s goal for the program is to be recognized with an AOPA Flight Training Experience Award. His advice to students is simple, don’t give up and keep working hard.
