Feb. 26th - Black History Month Business Challenge RI - DAY #26:
We Celebrate, The “RI Midnight Basketball League”.

The RI Midnight Basketball League was more than a sports program — it was a movement rooted in prevention, mentorship, and community empowerment across Rhode Island. “More than Basketball” was the tag-line that resinated with ballers and spectators across RI and beyond!

Designed to provide a safe, structured, and inspiring environment during late-night hours, the league transformed gymnasiums and blacktops into spaces of opportunity, discipline, and brother/ sisterhood when they were needed most.

Led by Community groups: DTA & KFM Leadership - was the epicenter for “Peace, Love & Basketball” for 3 consecutive summers in RI.

Participants were not only challenged to compete on the court but also encouraged to grow off the court.
The league integrated life-skills workshops, career exposure, conflict resolution training, and community dialogue with law enforcement and community leadership at the helm.

At its core, the “Community led” version of the RI Midnight Basketball League stood as a proactive response to violence and disconnection.

For multiple summer’s, the league strengthened relationships between adults, community leaders, local partners and law enforcement - while building confidence and unity among participants.

Through collaboration, consistency, and community investment, the RI Midnight Basketball League’s legacy continues to demonstrate that when you give people a place to belong, compete, and be mentored — you help shape leaders both on and off the court.

Any organization can run a basketball league, it takes true dedication, leadership and community involvement to do it like we did - we did it right!!

The Black History Month challenge is designed for the entire RI COMMUNITY as a vital part of Black history, culture, and economic empowerment—past, present, and future to participate.

The Black History Month challenge encourages community members, organizations, and institutions to intentionally support RI Black-owned businesses / programs throughout the month of February and POST ABOUT IT!!

We Celebrate, The “Handshake Initiative RI”.

The Handshake Initiative RI is a community-based, non-partisan volunteer effort that builds positive relationships with students by greeting them with handshakes, high-fives, and encouragement at school arrival times.
Founded by Col. Anthony Roberson, Central Falls PD - led by Community Leader’s, Kobi D. & Milou R, to provide hope and showcase diverse role models - the initiative operates in schools all across RI.
The Handshake Initiative RI is an empowerment movement focused on connection, collaboration, and opportunity. Rooted in the simple but powerful act of a handshake, high-five, fist pump or applause, the initiative symbolizes trust, unity, partnership, and shared responsibility across communities throughout the Ocean State.
The Handshake Initiative invites all community members to participate.
We can guarantee, it’s the best 30 minutes of “giving back” that you will experience in RI.
