Have a good weekend everyone!
An interesting anesthetic event occurred recently. A 5-year-old male castrated Greyhound present to the clinic for dental evaluation and cleaning. The patient received dexmedetomidine as part of his anesthetic protocol and while the characteristic sedative effects were displayed, the patient developed a significant ventricular tachyarrhythmia. The arrhythmia was treated, and the patient did excellent for both the procedure and had an uneventful recovery. Although uncommon, tachyarrhythmias can occur because of dexmedetomidine administration, it was a good opportunity to discuss systemic effects following dexmedetomidine administration with the team, and review treatment therapy indications and options.

Was delighted to work again with the team at Houndstooth Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery. This case was quite interesting! It had a congenital condition known as cricoid aplasia, diminishing the patients' ability to swallow while concurrently placed the patient at significant risk for aspiration. This was a great demonstration of team vigilance and prioritizing patient safety!

As a mobile board-certified veterinary anesthesiologist, I have the privilege to collaborate with practices that prioritize patient care and compassion with their services. Yesterday, I joined the wonderful team at Irvington Veterinary Clinic and supported a senior patient with considerable anesthetic risks. The team sent me this excellent picture capturing the induction phase of anesthesia. Thank you so much for the hospitality and comradery! (Posted with owner permission)
