Lia Griffith - Handcraft Your Life

13 years of crafting has taught me a lot. Here are 5 tips I wish I knew when I first started out:
Tip 1: Heavier crepe paper doesn’t mean better. Weight tells you how thick a sheet is, not how it moves. The magic is in the nuance of the stretch, and more is not always more.
Tip 2: Look closely at the grain. Those fine crinkled lines are the grain. Work with them and your petals come alive. Ignore them and your flower will “wilt.”
Tip 3: Use multiple types of crepe for one bloom. One paper cannot do it all. Heavy for the sculptural parts of a bloom. Extra-fine for delicate details. Double-sided for lifelike depth.
Tip 4: Don’t judge crepe paper by grams. That number is just the weight of the roll. What matters is texture. Fine and smooth or rich and heavy, the feel tells you everything.
Tip 5: Skip the party-store crepe. That crepe is made to hang, not to hold its shape. Florist-grade crepe paper stretches and takes color beautifully. The right paper does half the work for you.
We put together a guide to our favorite crepe. Click the Komi link in our bio. What tricks have you learned about crafting with crepe? Tell me below!
