Happy graduation day to this cutie! Leaving care at 11 lbs 6.5 oz. She’s smiling, finding her voice, and sleeping like a champ! Thank you for trusting me with your care! ❤️

This is a strong value that most communities birth midwives have always held. Your baby’s favorite spot is as close to you as possible. They don’t know life without you.
The 2025 Cochrane review on immediate and early skin-to-skin contact after birth highlights that further randomized controlled trials comparing skin-to-skin contact with ‘usual care’ are no longer ethical.
The findings show there is now enough evidence to make immediate skin-to-skin contact after birth the global standard of care, and as WHO already recommends skin-to-skin the standard of care, the authors argue that randomizing the separation of mother and newborn may no longer be justifiable.

One of the many things we do as midwives before we leave a home birth is a full newborn exam. We look babies over head to toe. Assessing the anatomy of their mouth gives us some good information about extra support they may need during their feeding journey. We love our IBCLCs (lactation consultants) and cranial sacral therapists to help make the feeding journey as smooth as possible.
