Common Question: Can You Paint Over Old Paint? 🎨

Short answer… yes.
But only if the surface is ready.

This is one of the most common DIY questions we hear, and the real answer comes down to prep.

Before you paint over existing paint, check this:

🧼 Clean the surface
Remove dirt, grease, and buildup so the new paint can adhere

🪵 Check for peeling or damage
If paint is flaking or failing, it needs to be scraped and sanded

🪚 Sand for adhesion
A light sanding helps the new coat bond properly

🧱 Prime when needed
Especially for stains, repairs, or major color changes

🚫 When not to paint over it
If the surface is heavily damaged or unstable, full removal may be the better option

Done right, painting over old paint can save time and still deliver long-lasting results.
