June prices fall in first since 2020

A key price gauge showed inflation falling for the first time since the pandemic in June, bolstering the case for interest-rate cuts. The U.S. Consumer Price Index, excluding volatile food and fuel, declined 0.1% last month from May, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Thursday. Meanwhile, both the overall and core indexes cooled more than expected on an annual basis, to 3% and 3.3% respectively. The report adds to evidence that Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has said is needed for the bank to lower rates from their 23-year high.
