As the Danish poet Inger Christensen wonderfully observed: “Everything that a writer writes could just as easily have been different – but not until it’s been written. As a life could have been different, but not until it’s been lived.”
I often hear people claim that they read only non-fiction, implying that there’s not much point in reading fiction because it’s just made up, and yet, it’s in the fictional world where we more readily realize our nuanced differences, the subtle emotional interchange between characters, and finally, between the reader and his or her understanding of that mercurial being we think of as “self.”
