Oh how fast they grow...

We recently came across a beautiful praying mantis in our back yard. My dear son and nature enthusiast asked if he could please keep it as a pet for a little bit. This is a picture of him reading about how to care for them while she sits upon his hand.

For some reason she really liked my son, she would calmly climb onto his hand and would stay put as he went about his business in the back yard. We kept her in a big bug box to observe her and my husband and son happily caught live flies to feed her and would mist her gently with water to hydrate her. It was really amazing to observe this beautiful creature up close.

We named her Charlotte.

Unfortunately her sweet little life was cut short by our rambunctious little puppy while she was outside in our yard. : (

We were all really saddened by her death, and I started looking up things online about the praying mantis. I came across this:

"If a Praying Mantis has crawled into your space;
Usually the Praying Mantis makes an appearance when we’ve flooded our lives with so much business, activity, or chaos that we can no longer hear the still small voice within us. Taking a step back and some simple meditation would be in order here because the external din we’ve created needs to be quieted so that we can come back to our own truth. The Praying Mantis always comes to us when we need peace, quiet and calm in our lives."

One of my favorite models the soon to be famous Kumi. Her bubbly personality is infectious -- it's a hard shoot when my biggest challenge is trying to get her to stop smiling for a "serious" look!
