Nightmares and night terrors are two completely different things. To help with nightmares we like to use monster spray or similar things to help with the fear. After a bit of comforting your little one will usually be ready to go back to sleep.
Night terrors sometimes require a full reset. When my oldest had them we often had to take him into the cool night air or sit in a bath with him to help ease out of that sleep cycle. Then, once he was awake we could calm him and put him back to bed. While there isn't much you can do about night terrors preventing overtiredness can at least reduce their frequency

The newborn days are absolutely wonderful, but they're also absolutely draining. Laying a good foundation can make for an easier transition when you sleep train later.
