9 corporate phrases you’ve never heard
That you’ll want to use immediately
Tired of the same old…
“Elephant in the room”
“Circle back”
“Punt this to next quarter”
Corporate jargon you’ve heard a million times?
Well, I’ve got 9 new terms to liven up those “all hands” meetings.
“𝗚𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗮 𝗕𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗪𝗿𝗮𝗽 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀”
What It Means:
The need to tone down a controversial but true statement.
Example:
“That’s true, but we can’t say it that way to Joe. We gotta bubble wrap this.”
“𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻’𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝘀 𝗔𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗻’𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆”
What It Means:
What’s special to one person means nothing to another.
Example:
“I hear you, I guess one man’s Thanksgiving is another man’s Thursday”
“𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗰 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗜𝘁”
What It Means:
Conducting a fast-paced 5-minute meeting.
Example:
“That’s fine, put something on my calendar, and we’re going to sync storm it”
“𝗪𝗲’𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝘁 𝗧𝗼 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀”
What It Means:
Putting in a high level of effort on a specific task over a short period of time.
Example:
“Hey fellas, we really need to crash the boards today on these sales calls”
“𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗴𝗴𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗲𝘀?”
What It Means:
Identifying the quality of one's character or work ethic.
Example:
“It’s tough times right now. When you boil potatoes, they get soft. When you boil eggs, they get hard. We need you to be an egg.”
“𝗕𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘀𝗵*𝘁 𝗕𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗼”
What It Means:
Calling out when a group is avoiding obvious problems.
Example:
“Are we going to address the real problem today, or are we just going to play bullsh*t bingo in today's meeting?”
“𝗪𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗹𝗯𝗼𝘄𝘀”
What It Means:
You’re working hard on something, but it’s not the root of the problem.
Example:
“Look, I get that you’re working on the button UI, but we’re really just massaging elbows here.”
“𝗜 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗪𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝗼 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗯 𝗔 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲”
What It Means:
You’ve put someone in a position where they can’t play to their core strength.
Example:
“Jim’s a great developer, but when it comes to managing people, I think we’re teaching a fish how to climb a tree”
“𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴”
What It Means:
Rallying colleagues for support in a private setting.
Example:
“Look, this idea won’t be popular, but it’s the right choice. We need to landslide this in the meeting.”
