Hi friends! Are you a practice owner? I'm beta testing software that checks for reviews you didn't know your practice had. Looking for some practices that will let me experiment while I decide whether to add this service to my digital marketing business. I won't charge you anything to run it and I'll share your results with you. Anyone interested?

8 years ago, my mother died on January 19th at the age of 51, after a 6 year battle with ovarian cancer. She was my best friend, my role model and my hero. It was she who inspired me to get involved in the healthcare space because I learned during this experience that it was about so much more than medicine. At the core of healthcare -- it's about love, family, community. It's about courage, strength, hope and faith. It's life, at it's most basic fundamentals. I can't imagine anything more powerful than that.

Patients are just people. They deserve empathy and education. They should feel empowered and engaged along their journey in health.

It doesn't matter if you're a dentist or a chiropractor, OB/GYN or a family therapist. At the core of it all, it's about having heart and sharing that heart with the patients you treat.

That's just one of the millions of things I learned from my mom.

Today is my baby Eliza's 1st birthday. I'm sharing it here not just because this picture is just too cute not to (but it is, right?!) but because it marks a major milestone for me as a working mother and business owner. Let me explain...

When I found out I was pregnant with Eliza, my older daughter, Daisy, was only 8 months old. I was working for a national nonprofit in women's health that I was extremely passionate about. In fact, it meant the world to me. I'd lost my mother to the disease it represented. And my grandmother. And I too was at enormous risk for it. It meant so much to me that I'd even been spending my time-off volunteering with the local chapter for the last 6 years.

When I told my boss that I was expecting again, I was promptly laid off days later. Yep, after years of dedication and service, it was that easy for this organization that meant so much to me to leave me unemployed and pregnant, with an 8 month old baby at home. I should also add that I was the main source of income for my little family, so we were in real trouble.

So I cried. A lot. I was really angry. And really hurt.I knew I would face extreme difficulty getting hired by any other company as I was already noticeably pregnant. So after a week or so of allowing myself to mourn the loss of my job, I took matters into my own hands.

I'd always wanted to help bring high quality, effective, but affordable medical marketing skills to small private practices that didn't have $1 million to spend on ads.I wanted to empower patients to learn and engage with their healthcare and the people providing it. So I started Patient Pulse Marketing. I reached out to hundreds of practices. I took certification courses and set-up my websites. I made a million phone calls and offers and proposals. And I connected to amazing medical professionals that each had unique stories to tell and patients to reach.

My little Eliza inspired me to become a small business owner. To be able to provide for my family and help other small business owners and families do the same. To do it all with the empathy, passion and loyalty that is so lacking by big businesses (and that includes many "nonprofits"!). I took a leap of faith that I may not have had the courage to take, if not for this tough situation that started it all.

So here's to my little girl's first trip around the sun. She's been the brightest, most joyful blessing I could have ever asked for. Here's to making it work as a mother and a female business owner. Here's to my first clients that took the jump with me and continue to put their trust in me. Here's to all that we can do in the next year. And here's to you for sticking with reading all the way through this epicly long post. :)

Happy Birthday, Eliza Jeanne!
