We honor the life and memory of Dr. James T. Johnson Jr, Co-Founder and CEO of Pittsburgh’s Afro-American Music Institute (AAMI) Dr. Johnson’s unwavering commitment to music education, musicianship and community has left an indelible mark on the lives of many, but especially Black youth. A jazz musician, gospel choir director and educator of 40+ years, Dr. Johnson performed internationally, shared stages with Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock and Ahmad Jamal, and taught thousands of student vocalists and musicians.

Dr. Johnson and his beloved, Pamela Johnson have served the Greater Pittsburgh music community dutifully. “Dr. J” is and will forever be part of the fabric of Pittsburgh music.
