When Khrushchev Came to Town | Pittsburgh Magazine 09/24/2024

I happened across this article yesterday totally by chance, but I was happy to see that today is the 65th anniversary of Nikita Krushchev’s visit to Mesta Machine in West Homestead! He loved Pittsburgh!
Sounds like a good day to go have a beer at Golden Age Beer Co. in Homestead. Or maybe a Black Russian (created for Perle Mesta whose husband George founded Mesta Machine — they are both in the Mesta mausoleum in Homewood Cemetery in Squirrel Hill!) at your favorite bar wherever you are!

When Khrushchev Came to Town | Pittsburgh Magazine Find out what the Soviet leader had to say about Pittsburgh when he visited in autumn 1959.

The Strip Show with Rick Sebak - Cinderlands Warehouse - Strip District - Pittsburgh, PA | Tock 09/22/2024

If you don’t have dinner plans tomorrow (Monday) night, you may want to consider coming to Cinderlands Beer Co in the Strip for a special showing of our WQED classic program titled THE STRIP SHOW. The folks at Cinderlands are celebrating their location that used to be the Spaghetti Warehouse with a dinner and this show from 1996, followed by a Q&A. I will probably bring a few vintage posters!
Doors open at 6:30.
2601 Smallman Street

So Minette Seate and I have both worked at WQED more than 30 years. The picture shows us doing Pledge together in 2018. And tonight (just like last Wednesday night) we’ll be playing some of our old vinyl records at The Independent Brewing Company on Shady Avenue in Squirrel Hill. You can stop by between 6pm and 8pm or so, get a beer, some excellent food and/or maybe a drink.
And in celebration of the bar’s 10th anniversary this week, they are reviving their original cocktail called “A Gentleman’s Breakfast, or the Rick Sebak” from early 2015! That’s how I first got to know the place. They named a drink after me. A cool variation (with candied bacon!) on an Old Fashioned.
You can tune in to our records starting around 6 at twitch.tv/independentpgh
