Aeration and seeding season runs August through October — and if your lawn has been looking thin, patchy or just tired this summer, this is probably what it needs.
Here's what's actually happening underground: over time soil gets compacted from foot traffic, weather and equipment. Once it's compacted, water and nutrients can't move through it the way they should. Your grass sits on top struggling rather than rooting deep.
Aeration pulls small plugs of soil out and opens everything back up. When you overseed on freshly aerated soil, the seed makes direct contact with loose soil and germinates far better than on a hard surface.
Seeds that go in during the fall window come up thick in spring.
