Since spraining my own ankle this week, I thought is was beneficial to tell you what happens to the body in such an instance: When you sprain your ankle, the immediate response is for your body to protect itself by shifting the weight of your body to the uninjured side during the healing process. The entire body adapts to this new position and all of the joints & muscles on the uninjured side are put under new stress setting the stage for additional pain and injury.

As the ankle heals & becomes able to bear weight again, you might think you are "back to normal" but, unfortunately, the adhesions and scar tissue created have become a permanent part of your structure during the healing process. Without intervention, the connective tissue will continue to form thicker, stronger adhesions, forcing muscles to shorten and lose the ability to completely relax, resulting in a constant state of tension.

Any injury effects the body as a whole. This is when Structural Integration becomes a great form of bodywork integrating the entire body, not just the specific area that's injured. By making sure the body is functioning properly, one can speed recovery and decrease the chance of another injury.
