Countless small experiments become part of Mickayel Thurin’s visual language.
Painted paper and cut fabric letters appear in “What You Are Looking For is Inside You”, while other sketches, collages, and handwritten reflections are layered, transformed, or hidden through the process of making.
Shifting is an exhibition about growth, self-examination, and the many versions of ourselves that exist at once.
These studio moments offer a glimpse into the making of Shifting, on view through this Saturday, July 18.

Five recent ceramic works by Timothy Carr explore memory, place, and connection through porcelain.
Many of these cups were developed during Carr’s residency in Jingdezhen, China, known as the porcelain capital of the world, at The KilnRoom International Ceramic Residency. There, Carr immersed himself in traditional porcelain techniques dating back 1,200 years for six weeks while exploring themes of home, longing, and the shared language of clay.

Inspired by a beloved South Philadelphia restaurant, “Mike’s BBQ Cup” brings together two cities that shaped the work: Philadelphia, often called the mural capital of the world, and Jingdezhen, known as the porcelain capital of the world.

The Director’s Merit Award went to “Common Ground” at The International Cup Exhibition 2026 at The Clay Studio of Missoula, MT. Created during Carr’s residency in Jingdezhen, the work reflects on clay as a shared language across cultures. As Carr writes, “...working within the language of clay was literally and figuratively our common ground.”

How do you paint a self that is constantly changing?
In “Shifting”, Mickayel Thurin uses self-portraiture and mixed-media to explore identity as something layered and evolving. Handwritten reflections, and unexpected materials are brought into conversation with one another, composing the many versions of our selves that coexist, and what they might have to teach one another.
