This trip will be remembered for it's challenges, accomplishments, breakdowns and break throughs. Every step, whether hiking a mountain through volcanic sand or digging a two foot trench or mixing thousands of pounds of cement, boarding a boat, or simply pulling off a circle in the hot sun had it's ying and yang. We had sick kids, schedule changes, changes in perspective and moments that will last a life time. In the end, we built two houses for families that should last 40 years, we supplied food for people that will last from one week to one month, and we tried our best to serve others to make the world a better place. Svetlana Tikhonov built Quadrat !!.Academy to be an innovative Montessori alternative education that empowers students to be agents of change. This is the hardest lift of all. Matching values to practice and empowering young people to design a better world takes guts, hard work, letting go, creating experiences for students to see the world differently, and takes time and patience. We live in a world of ever increasing anger and fear. Yet, Asher in a speech during the house dedication said, “We need more of this (serving others) and being kind in the world.” This is the transformation. This is the empathy that will make a better world. Our students at Quadrat Academy can be and are agents of a better world. Today, with that empathy, they moved the needle and had amazing experiences that the will carry with them forever. They will continue to move the needle. Alternative education is an education where one realizes they are practicing today for a better tomorrow poco y poco (little by little). Thank you Svetlana for providing the space for our young people to be agents of change by helping others. This is innovation. How about a world where students find ways to help others?

Building two homes for families in Guatemala with my Quadrat Academy students and parents. Today we finished and dedicated the houses. I am grateful we can give, grow, and be a part of a global community.
